van den Hul is a Dutch company founded by A. J. van den Hul, a physicist and engineer best known for two things: phono cartridges and cables. He developed the van den Hul stylus shape, a fine-line diamond profile designed to trace record grooves more accurately and with less wear, which has been used by many cartridge makers. His own cartridges, including the Colibri, Grasshopper, Frog and Crimson, are highly regarded moving-coil designs. The company is equally known for its cables, which pioneered the use of carbon conductors and of linear crystal copper and silver in interconnects and speaker cables, with models such as The Clearwater, The Inspiration and many others. Van den Hul also supplies professional broadcast and studio cables. The company remains based in the Netherlands, and its cables and cartridges are found in hi-fi systems around the world. Its stylus profile in particular has had a lasting influence on cartridge design, and its cables have been used in many recording studios.
