Michell Engineering is a British precision engineering company founded by John Michell and based in Hertfordshire, best known for its turntables. Its GyroDec, launched in the early 1980s, has a transparent acrylic platter, visible brass weights around the platter's rim and a suspended sub-chassis, and it became one of the most recognisable turntable designs ever made. The GyroDec has stayed in production in updated forms for decades. It was joined by the higher-end Orbe, which uses a heavier platter and a more elaborate bearing, and by the more affordable TecnoDec and the TecnoArm tonearm. Michell has also made phono stages, power supplies and accessories such as record clamps, and its engineering skills have been applied to work outside hi-fi. Michell turntables are known for their quiet, stable and detailed sound and for the visual drama of their open, sculptural design. After John Michell's death in 2006 the business continued as a family firm, still building its products by hand.
