Vertex AQ was a Welsh hi-fi company founded in 1999 by Steve Elford and John Cheadle and based in a spa town in central Wales. Elford had been a senior engineering officer in the Royal Air Force, working on avionics, and Cheadle had worked at several British audio companies, including Roksan. Vertex AQ's first product was the Jaya, a shunt-type mains filter that plugs into a spare socket to absorb electrical noise. The company built its whole approach around the idea that vibration and electrical interference are major causes of poor sound, and it developed cables, mains distribution blocks, equipment supports and acoustic absorbers that incorporate vibration-damping and noise-absorbing modules. It also produced its own Aletheia electronics. Vertex AQ's products were unusual and divided opinion, but many owners and reviewers reported clear improvements. The company's current status is unclear. Its products were sold through specialist dealers and were especially popular in the UK.
