Hovland Company is an American firm from California, founded by Chris Hovland, that first became known not for complete products but for components: its MusiCap capacitors were widely used by other manufacturers and by enthusiasts upgrading their equipment, because they were felt to sound more natural than conventional parts. Hovland then applied that knowledge to its own electronics. The HP-100, a valve preamplifier with distinctive retro styling and a built-in phono stage, became its best-known product and was widely praised in the American hi-fi press. It was followed by the Sapphire valve power amplifier and the solid-state Radia. The company also made interconnects and speaker cables. Hovland's products were known for their rich, detailed and musical sound and for the care taken over parts selection. Its current status is unclear, and its products are now mostly found on the second-hand market, where the HP-100 in particular remains sought after. Its MusiCap capacitors also remain well known among DIY builders.
