Ascendo is a German loudspeaker company that began in 1999 as a research and development cooperation, supported by German government funding, working on loudspeakers, room acoustics and acoustic measurement. Its speakers, such as the System Z and System M reviewed in the early 2000s, and the later System ZF3, are known for their engineering-led approach. A notable feature is a separate, adjustable high-frequency and midrange unit whose position can be moved so that the drivers are time-aligned for a given listening distance. The company supplies set-up tools to help owners match the speakers to their room. The System Z was a three-way design with a ribbon tweeter and large bass driver. Ascendo has also worked on digital room-acoustic processing and acoustic treatment. Its speakers favour function over styling and are aimed at listeners who want very precise imaging and timing. Its designs are rarely seen outside specialist circles, but they are well respected by those who know them.
