Audiolab is a British electronics brand founded in 1983 by Philip Swift and Derek Scotland. Its first product, the 8000A integrated amplifier, became one of the most respected British amplifiers of its era, admired for a clean, neutral sound and solid build at a sensible price. The 8000 series grew to include CD players, tuners, preamplifiers and power amplifiers, all sharing the same plain, functional styling. The brand passed through several owners and was later acquired by IAG, the group that also owns Quad, after which it was relaunched with a strong focus on digital audio. The M-DAC, a compact DAC and headphone amplifier, brought Audiolab to a new generation of listeners, and later ranges such as the 6000 and 9000 series combine amplification, digital conversion and streaming. Audiolab's identity today is still built on what made the 8000A popular: carefully engineered British-designed electronics that aim to be transparent rather than coloured, at prices well below the high-end mainstream.
