Burmester Audiosysteme is a German high-end company founded in Berlin in 1977 by Dieter Burmester, an engineer and keen musician. Its products are instantly recognisable by their mirror-polished chrome fascias, and they are built by hand in the company's Berlin factory. Burmester's first product, the 777 preamplifier, was followed by long-running models such as the 808 preamplifier and the 911 power amplifier, which stayed in production for decades with updates. The company makes amplifiers, preamplifiers, phono stages, CD players and loudspeakers, from the Top Line up to the Reference Line. Burmester is also known for premium in-car audio systems for brands including Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Bugatti. Dieter Burmester died in 2015, and the business continues as a family-run company. Its electronics are designed around direct-coupled, balanced circuits without coupling capacitors in the signal path, and its sound is often described as smooth, open and powerful. Its equipment is a familiar sight at major hi-fi shows around the world.
