Carfrae is a small British loudspeaker maker from Devon that builds horn-loaded speakers by hand to order. Its best-known design, the CarfraeHORN, uses a single full-range drive unit from Lowther with no crossover, mounted in a horn cabinet built from continuous sections of birch laminate. Full-range, single-driver horns of this kind are very efficient, and a review claimed the CarfraeHORN could fill a room from about four watts while reaching down to low bass, making it a natural partner for low-powered valve amplifiers. Because there is no crossover, the sound is coherent and direct, though such designs need careful placement and amplifier matching. Carfrae offered custom finishes chosen by each customer and sold its speakers direct and through a handful of dealers. Information about the company is limited, and its current activity is unclear. Its speakers are a good example of the small-scale, hand-built horn designs that remain popular in Britain.
