Chord Electronics is a British company based in Kent, founded in 1989 by John Franks. Franks had an engineering background in aerospace power supplies, and Chord's first products were power amplifiers using high-frequency switch-mode power supplies, an unusual choice in high-end audio at the time. Chord amplifiers, such as the SPM series, became known for their power and control, and they were used in professional settings including studios. In digital audio, Chord worked with the designer Rob Watts, whose FPGA-based DAC designs use very long digital filters rather than standard DAC chips. Products such as the portable Mojo and Hugo, the desktop Hugo TT and the flagship DAVE made Chord one of the best-known names in digital audio and headphone listening. Chord products are known for their machined aluminium cases, glowing spherical controls and porthole windows. The company designs and builds its products in the UK and has become one of the leading British names in both hi-fi and headphone audio.
