Electrocompaniet is a Norwegian electronics company founded in 1973. Its first product, the "2-Channel Audiophile Amplifier", was based on circuit work by the Finnish engineer Matti Otala and others into transient intermodulation distortion, a problem then poorly understood, and it gained an international reputation for its sound. Since then the company has built a range of amplifiers, preamplifiers, CD players and, more recently, streaming and wireless products, all made in Norway. Its electronics are easily recognised by their black fascias with gold knobs and lettering. Electrocompaniet's designs typically use fully balanced, high-current circuits with low feedback, and its amplifiers have a reputation for a smooth, refined presentation. Models such as the AW-series power amplifiers, the EC 4.8 preamplifier and the ECI integrated amplifiers have been among its best known. The company remains one of the few Scandinavian electronics makers with a long, continuous history in high-end audio. Its products are widely distributed in Europe and Asia.
