Hansen Audio is a Canadian loudspeaker maker from Ontario, headed by Lars Hansen, who was previously president of the American loudspeaker company Dahlquist. Unusually for a small high-end company, Hansen designed and built its own drive units, as well as its cabinets and crossovers, which gave it full control over the design of each speaker. Its range was named after ranks of royalty and nobility: the Prince, Knight, King and the flagship Emperor. The Prince and King were reviewed in Stereophile, and the Knight was launched in the UK in the late 2000s. Hansen speakers were known for heavy, deeply braced cabinets with a distinctive stepped profile, and for a sound described as powerful, detailed and well integrated. The company's current status is unclear, and its speakers are now mostly found on the second-hand market. Making its own drivers set Hansen apart from most small speaker companies, and it allowed the designers to tailor each driver closely to its cabinet and crossover.
