Harbeth is a British loudspeaker company founded in 1977 by Dudley Harwood, who had led loudspeaker research at the BBC. The name combines his surname with that of his wife, Elizabeth. Harwood's BBC work had included developing polypropylene as a cone material, and Harbeth's early speakers put that research into domestic designs. In 1986 the company was bought by Alan Shaw, who has led it ever since and developed its own cone material, known as RADIAL. Harbeth speakers are known for their natural, uncoloured midrange, particularly with voices, and for traditional thin-walled cabinets that are deliberately allowed to contribute to the sound in a controlled way, following BBC practice. The range includes small monitors such as the P3ESR, licensed versions of the BBC LS3/5a, the Compact 7, the Super HL5 and the large Monitor 40. Harbeth remains a small, privately owned company based in Sussex, with a loyal following worldwide.
