Quad is one of the most famous names in British hi-fi. The company was founded in 1936 by Peter Walker as the Acoustical Manufacturing Company, and took its name from the Quality Unit Amplifier Domestic of the late 1940s. Quad became known for two things: elegant, compact electronics and electrostatic loudspeakers. The Quad II valve amplifier is still admired today, and the transistorised 303 and 405 power amplifiers were widely used both at home and in broadcasting. Walker's Electrostatic Loudspeaker of 1957, usually called the ESL-57, was the first full-range electrostatic speaker in commercial production and is still prized for its clarity in the midrange. The ESL-63 of 1981 refined the idea, and its descendants remain in the range. Quad is now part of the IAG group, which also owns Audiolab, and it continues to make electrostatic speakers alongside conventional loudspeakers and amplifiers, with the ESLs still regarded as the heart of the brand.
