Sonus Faber is an Italian loudspeaker maker founded near Vicenza in 1983 by Franco Serblin. Serblin's idea was that a loudspeaker should be a fine piece of furniture as well as a fine instrument, and the company became famous for cabinets of solid wood, leather and lacquer, inspired by the craft of Italian violin makers. Its early Electa Amator set the template, and the "Homage" range, with models named after the great Cremonese luthiers (Guarneri, Amati and Stradivari), became its best-known designs. The lute-shaped cabinets of many models are both an aesthetic signature and a way to reduce internal standing waves. Serblin left the company in the mid-2000s and later founded his own brand, Franco Serblin. Sonus Faber continued under new owners and is now part of the McIntosh Group. Its range runs from compact standmounts to large flagship floorstanders such as the Aida, and its sound is usually described as warm, rich and musical.
