Spendor is a British loudspeaker company founded in 1969 by Spencer Hughes, a BBC research engineer, and his wife Dorothy, whose first names gave the company its name. Hughes had worked on the BBC's monitor loudspeaker research, and Spendor's first product, the BC1, applied that thinking to a domestic speaker with remarkably natural midrange. The BC1 and its successors such as the SP1 became classics of the so-called "BBC sound", known for a smooth, uncoloured voice that suits acoustic music and speech. Spendor also built official BBC-licensed monitors such as the LS3/5a. The company has remained based in Sussex and has passed through family and private ownership. Today it makes several ranges, from the Classic series, which continues the traditional BBC-style designs, to the A-line and D-line, which use the company's own drive units in more modern, slimmer cabinets. Spendor speakers are widely used by listeners who prefer natural tone over exaggerated detail, and the brand's classic designs remain a reference point for the British monitor tradition.

More about Spendor

For many years this was the reference loudspeaker that so many tried to copy and emulate. It's reputation is still strong today. There is always controversy over speakers that are really just totally neutral and flat but this is very often because they are not always powered by suitable equipment. The Spendors are just such speakers.

All the Spendor range are beautifully finished and always blend into any domestic environment very well. Spendor has stood and will continue to stand the test of time and for the classical music lover probably slightly more than anything else, Spendor make a fine choice.
