Tannoy is one of Britain's oldest loudspeaker brands, founded in London in 1926 by Guy Fountain. The name comes from the tantalum alloy used in an early rectifier the company made, and it became so associated with public-address systems that "tannoy" entered British English as a word for a loudspeaker system. In hi-fi, Tannoy is famous for its Dual Concentric drive unit, introduced in 1947, which places the tweeter at the centre of the bass cone so that all frequencies come from a single point, giving coherent, focused sound. The Prestige range, including the Westminster Royal, Canterbury, Kensington and Turnberry, uses large Dual Concentric drivers in traditional, beautifully finished cabinets inspired by classic furniture. Tannoy also makes professional monitors and installation speakers. The company is now based in Coatbridge, Scotland, and has been part of the Music Tribe group. Tannoy's long history makes it one of the most recognisable names in loudspeakers anywhere in the world.
